A late post on our weekend

John and I had a great weekend.

And so did the dogs.  They got shampoo and cuts at their favorite place - "Top Dog".  Here are a few pictures, and I mean a few since they did not want to stop for pics!
Sassy was least excited to get her picture taken, but she did allow me one quick picture in the car.  Daisy was a bit more cooperative for a few pics.  If they let me take a few more this week I will be sure to post them for you!

Weigh-in was on Saturday.  I am down 26 lbs.  Lost 2 lbs last week - not too shabby.

John and I did very little work on the barn over the weekend - we decided to shop and spend time together instead!  We didn't hear anymore on the sale of the house so we figured that the barn could wait for a rainy day and not waste a beautiful weekend on cleaning.

Friday night I met up with my BFF Diane!!
And her daughter Kristen
Who is just as cute as she can be!  And she told me a secret .......

She is PREGNANT!!!!
She just found out!

Diane is going to be a Grandma again - and I am trying to talk Kristen into letting me be an honorary Aunt.  I am so happy for her and for Diane too!

Hope y'all have a great week.  I will try and update again tomorrow!

Family Picnic & weekend plans

Today from 4-6 PM we had a family picnic at work for all the residents and their families!  I really enjoyed seeing all the residents eating with their families.  I don't always get to see the resident's families and I was impressed with the number that turned out.  It was a wonderful day for a picnic.

Tomorrow being Friday - I get to have supper with my BFF Diane.  I can't wait!  Far East here we come.  It has been almost 2 weeks since we spent a day together - I am so excited!  We will be celebrating her Birthday, 5 days late.  I hope she likes her gift!  I actually bought it for her before she even got home from Florida in May.  I couldn't resist getting it for her as soon as I saw it.  Hope she likes it!

John and I are working on plans for the weekend.  So far all we could come up with was to get the dogs a shampoo and cut.  I will be sure to post some pictures of their new haircuts this weekend.  We always take them to Top Dog - they love the place and we love the wonderful job they do with our dogs!  We HIGHLY recommend them.

So, I guess we will have to spend the rest of the weekend cleaning out the barn.  Yes we have many days worth of work left.  It is hard to believe how much a family can collect in 12 years.  Boy do we have a bunch of stuff.

Have a GREAT weekend.  I will try and take some pictures this weekend to post!

No news = ?

I guess no news is really no news.

We have not heard anything about the house in almost a week.  I guess it is good that we did not hold our breath.  I am sure that it will happen when it is meant to happen.

House for Sale

Spread the word - The Barker's have a house for sale in Maine - any takers?

Just let me know!  :)

Yummy Pasta Salad

I actually got home on time today and made a yummy pasta salad.

It was perfect.  Fresh veggies - very light on the dressing - just some dill, chives and a touch of balsamic vinegar.  Looks great - tastes even better.  I know what I am taking for lunch tomorrow!

I never knew it could be so tasty to eat healthy.  For the past 2 months I have eaten very healthy and not missed the junk at all.  I have especially enjoyed the side effects of eating healthy - you know - that 24 lb loss!  Gotta love it!

John and I have also started walking 3 miles 2-3 times per week.  I really need to get some better shoes for walking.  The ones I have make my heels ache after walking.  It is also much harder to get motivated to walk than it has been to eat healthy.  I am hoping that having some comfortable shoes will get me going or at least keep me from having an excuse not to walk.   Plus, it is always good to have an excuse to go shopping.

Well, time for some "family" time - Have a wonderful week!

Some people can be very nice...

Having encountered many nice people and many not so nice people, I have decided to thank all those who frequently go out of their way to be nice.

In working with the elderly, I am often surprised how a simple nice word or smile can brighten their day.  I am also often surprised at how few people take the time to just smile at those that are lonely and in need of a kind word.  How much energy does it take to give a smile in passing or a quick "good morning"?  I do see quite a few people who smile and say a kind word to those who are in need and to those of you I would like to say THANK YOU!  To those who do not extend a smile or a minute of their time - try it - it does the heart good to see someone's eyes light up just because you noticed them.

I frequently notice over the phone if someone is having a great day or a pretty lousy day just by the tone of their voice.  Often I am tempted to ask what makes them sound so happy (or not) over the phone - but I really know.  It is all in attitude.  Smiling before answering the phone helps tremendously.  Smiling can also affect your own mood.  They say that you will notice an immediate improvement in your mood and in the moods of people around you with the simple act of smiling.

When I Google "being a nice person" I actually come up with 199,000,000 results.  That is unbelievable.

Here are a few hints on how to be a nice person:
  • Smile - a smile will let others know that you are pleasant and inviting
  • Say Hello - when walking past past someone, even a stranger, try to acknowledge their presence
  • Ask others how they are doing - take the time to ask someone how things are going in their lives
  • Be a good listener - Listen (really listen) when other people are talking to you
  • Be courteous -  Always say "please," "thank you" and "you're welcome"
  • Treat people with respect
  • Be positive - Don't be negative or critical
The moral to this post is:

    What a wonderful weekend...

Yesterday and today have been just about perfect.

First, I weighed in this morning and found that I had lost a total of 24 pounds - Woot - Woot!  I was in seventh heaven after that!

We then went to Yarmouth, ME to visit with our close friends, Judith and Bill.  It was so wonderful seeing them.  It has been WAY too long!  Judith is recovering from a pretty bad accident and we all need to keep her in our prayers.  While visiting with them, I had my very first lobster roll.  And it was delicious!  Thanks Judith and Bill for a perfect day!

Doesn't that look delicious?  Yum Yum!

I can't believe that I still have tomorrow off.  I love taking Friday off - I actually feel like I get to have a real weekend.  Now to figure what we want to do tomorrow.

    The sky's the limit!

    Day Off!

I am thankful for a MUCH needed day off!

I actually did not wake up until 10 AM and it is only Friday.  I feel like I am cheating.  But no, I actually have the day off!

I have tried to take at least one Friday off each month to relax and get in some much needed fun time.

I have finished my 2nd cup of coffee and am ready to hop in the shower and start the day's adventures.

I hope you enjoy your day as much as John and I are going to...

    Tips on Speaking Southern'

I came across some funny information to be used by anyone wanting to understand what a Southerner is actually saying.  These words can also be used in your own everyday conversations to help you sound a bit more southern.

I had to chuckle over many of these - I hope you enjoy them as much as I did...

    • right = very, quite. "It's right near time to eat now." "I'm right tired."

    Monday ~ Monday

    Pretty good Monday!

My Aunt Catherine is doing much better.  I spoke with her last night and she sounded good.  Her arm is broken and she has 9 stitches but is not ready to let that get her down.  Thank goodness she did not damage her hip - she just had her hip replaced at the beginning of the summer.

I got to spend all day Sunday with my BFF - Diane!  We went to Portland and out to eat and shopping!  I love spending time with her - it is so nice to be around someone who accepts you just as you are!  Thanks for the great day Diane!  Next time we need to go to the lake for a day of sun before the weather turns cold!

On Saturday, John and I worked on cleaning the barn.  I never thought 2 people could collect so much stuff in 11 years.  We have decided to have a tag sale and get rid of some of the "stuff"!  I think it may take awhile to get everything ready!  Hopefully we can have it ready for a Labor Day weekend sale.  I love thinking that someone could use the items we are no longer using.  Recycle & Reuse!  It is such a great habit to get into.

I spoke with the Realtor this afternoon.  The couple that looked at the house a week ago are still interested.  He needed some questions answered.  You never know.  We may just sell this place before the snow flies.  John keeps reminding me that we bought this place in January.

    Have a GREAT week!

    WHEW, what a week!

And I thought this week was going to be full of wonderful news...

Monday, John and I were full of anticipation waiting to hear about the sell of the house - !

Tuesday we woke early and suddenly the phone rings.  (It is never good news when the phone rings early in the morning or late at night)  My Aunt Chris called to tell me that my Aunt Catherine has fallen and hurt herself.  The ambulance is at her home to take her to the hospital and there is lots of blood on the floor.  I took a deep breath and got the information I needed to call the hospital and find out how she was doing.  After several calls - I found that she was hurt but going to be okay - so I left for work and TONS of meetings.

Later on Tuesday, I found out that my Aunt actually broke her arm and needed 9 stitches.  She is doing okay!  My Uncle Ross actually hurt his back pretty bad trying to pick her up after she had fallen.

What a powerless feeling to know that your family is hurt and you are so far away and unable to help.

Tomorrow is Friday, and I am definitely ready for the weekend.  Part of me would like to make lots of wonderful plans to get my mind off the worries of the week - the other part of me would like to plan to be at home spending time with my best friend and love of my life and just enjoying being with each other.

    I'll think about that tomorrow...

    No news = Good news?

So, is no news really good news?

Not for someone with absolutely NO patience!

There may be an update tomorrow.

    Enough about that!!

This week is starting of good - Work went good!

John stopped by work - which always makes my day brighter!
(old picture, but I love it...)

One of my employees brought in some fresh cucumbers and yellow squash!  Yum!  Guess what John and I had for supper.

I bet the steamed squash makes you hungry!

    Thanks a bunch Melodie!

It is late and past my bedtime.  I will be sure to update everyone tomorrow.  Sweet Dreams!

    Sunday - Sunday!

Another great day at the Barker household!

John and I went for a 2 mile walk today.  The weather was just perfect.  In the low 70's very sunny and a light breeze.  We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day.
Now we are enjoying a wonderful movie - HARVEY with James Stewart.

     He sure is handsome!

If I remember correctly, my mom liked Jimmy Stewart also!
    She had great taste!

Hope you all have a great week!
